We are recruiting volunteers help to able to answer the
volume of neuroscientific questions we have been receiving.
The questions are predominantly from elementary and high
school-aged children and are most often about very basic
concepts and facts about nervous system structure and
function.

Brains
Rule! is funded by a Science Education Drug Abuse Partnership
Award (SEDAPA) grant from the National Institute on Drug
Abuse. By its very nature, then, this funding program seeks
to build collaborations between various groups and organizations
to enhance neuroscience education outreach efforts and education
about drug abuse research and careers.
Brains
Rule! is a partnership drawn from the fields of basic science
(neuroscientists), medicine (neurologists), and applied
neuroscience (i.e., those who use neuroscience principals
to improve quality of life, such as occupational and physical
therapists, nurses caring for neurologically-ill patients,
etc.). Together, in an interdisciplinary, community based
co-operative model of interactive education, the project
seeks to engage children (K-12) and the general lay public
in learning about the brain and neuroscience. |
| Brains
Rule! Project Goals
To
encourage better and more effective communication with the
general public, and demonstrate to them by first hand experience
the value of informal science education as a community service.
To
facilitate communication and networking relationships between
neuroscientists, neurologists, occupational and physical
therapists, teachers, and community groups.
Brains
Rule! Neuroscience Expositions Help Children By:
- Encouraging
elementary school-age children, particularly girls and
those belonging to minority groups, to develop and maintain
an interest in neuroscience and the process of scientific
inquiry.
- Exposing
elementary-school age children to a variety of neuroscience-related
career options, both scientific and clinical.
-
Educating elementary-school age children about the nervous
system through engaging, interactive activities that
can be replicated and adapted as needed in a variety
of settings.
Brains
Rule! Neuroscience Expositions Help The Public By:
- Improving
the general science literacy of the American public
via a focus on neuroscience.
- Improving
the public's understanding of the value of neuroscience
and drug abuse research by demonstrating the important
interconnections between basic, diagnostic, clinical
and applied neuroscience, and everyday life.
The
Brains Rule! Web Site:
- Presents
neuroscience concepts in a learning format designed
to explain, while stimulating the process of inquiry
and critical thinking.
- Provides
a means for mentorship and role modeling of neuroscientists
and health professionals, a process fundamental to the
success of girls and underrepresented groups in choosing
these fields as careers.
- Provides
a tool for dissemination of project activities.
-
Serves as a forum of communication between neuroscientists,
health professionals, and the public.
- Acts
as a resource to assist other communities in presenting
and organizing "Brains Rule! Neuroscience Expositions".
